The RUH offers an excellent training opportunity for 3 Specialty Training Registrars in Haematology in a busy department providing clinical and laboratory haematology services to a population of circa 500,000.
The laboratory analyses circa 1000 FBCs per day and 30 bone marrows per month. Inpatients are treated in William Budd ward which is a 22 bedded unit shared with Oncology with 5 filtered air rooms for patients undergoing intensive therapy and autologous stem cell transplantation. There is a busy Day Unit adjacent to William Budd ward, the Outpatient Clinic and the Outpatient Chemotherapy Suite. 6 outpatient clinics are held per week.
There will be 4 Consultant Haematologists from February 2009. Inpatients are under the care of the Attending Haematologist and Consultants undertake this role in rotation for a 2 month period. 1 STR is ward based, another is lab-based and the third manages the Day Unit and outlying inpatients on a rotational basis. A Haematology Specialist Nurse, Research Sister and a skilled team of ward, chemotherapy and outpatient nurses help deliver the clinical service. A weekly MDT meeting involving a radiologist and a histo-pathologist reviews all newly diagnosed patients and treatment plans. Trainees are expected to take part in a weekly ‘donut-round’ as part of their training programme.
There is a supportive team of biomedical scientists in the laboratory who are always happy to advise and provide training in areas of laboratory haematology with the additional support of a Transfusion Practitioner and an Anticoagulant Therapy Co-ordinator. The laboratory based STR will report bone marrow aspirates and trephines and referred blood films with the support of the Laboratory-based Consultant Haematologist.
The RUH is a supportive environment in which to gain a broad experience in clinical and laboratory Haematology. You will certainly be busy and encounter clinical challenges but you will have a large number of learning opportunities, be able to develop your clinical and laboratory skills and be well supported by the Consultants and the other members of the multidisciplinary team.
