Programme Introduction:

Getting results from your team members and in turn your team – is vital to the success of any leader. This programme has been designed to explore how to access a variety of personal skills and techniques so that you can fulfil the potential from your colleagues, team members and to create development opportunities for yourself.

Learning Outcomes: By the end of this programme, delegates will be able to:

  • Name the 5 levels of leadership
  • Define the 4 stages of situational leadership
  • State 5 characteristics of an influential person
  • Explain the 5 behaviours for influencing others
  • Give 3 reasons why we defer delegation
  • Name the 4 stages of how a team forms
  • State the 8 team roles with explanations for each
  • List 5 team building activities
  • Describe the 4 personality styles and explain each one
  • Name the 7 parts of the conflict resolution model
  • Understand what SMART stands for and give a working example

Suggested Programme Agenda

The agenda covers Demonstrating Personal qualities (continuing personal development, acting with integrity), Working with others (developing networks, encouraging contribution, working with teams), which are directly contained within the Clinical Leadership Competency Framework.

Day 1: Leadership capabilities and styles

  • Introductions, Expectations & Key Learning Objectives
  • Explanation of importance of recording Key Learning Points
  • Module 1: Developing your leadership style(s)
  • The NHS and the 7 principles of management (the 7th being leadership)
  • The Clinical Leadership Competency Framework and its’ impact on encouraging doctors to lead
  • Qualities and characteristics of leaders: investigation and self assessment

Exercise: the Symbols game (assesses each individual’s ability to lead)

  • Module 2: Flexible leadership
  • An inspection of flexible leadership styles
  • Identifying developmental needs (using a variety of methods e.g. WPBA or Appraisal/PDP)
  • When to use the different styles and in what situation
  • Effective planning and delegation

Exercise: the unexploded bomb (gives delegates an opportunity to express their own styles); this exercise can be run indoors or outdoors.

  • Module 3: Developing personal qualities
  • The importance of Influencing others
  • Self assessment and role-play
  • Different personality types, assessing self and others and how to influence each type.

Project between days 1 and 2:

  • Delegates will be asked to identify an action point from day 1 and either scope out how they would attempt the task or bring evidence of how they undertook it.

Day 2: Leading teams & working with others

  • Review day 1 learning competencies, assess projects and outline agenda for day 2.
  • Module 4: Creating high performing teams (including multi-disciplinary teams)
  • What makes a team perform to its highest standard?
  • How do teams develop and what role does the leader have to take at each stage?
  • Understanding your team role

Exercise: Outdoors (weather permitting): Street wars or, if inclement weather: Moon safari

  • Team communications including briefings and meeting management
  • Team thinking including creative thinking techniques

Exercise: Blind shapes

  • Coaching the team (as individuals and as a team)
  • Exercise: Square, circle, triangle coaching

This exercise can again be run either indoors or outdoors

Project between day 2 and 3:

  • Delegates will be asked to identify an action point from day 2 and either scope out how they would attempt the task, or bring evidence of how they undertook it.

Day 3: Strategic Leadership

  • Review the learning competencies from day 1 and 2,assess projects and outline the agenda for day 3.
  • Module 5: Building strategic visions and plans
  • Determining vision
  • Creating values, ethos and culture
  • Developing the plan

Exercise: working with a given case study, develop all of the above

  • Module 6: Managing and leading team performance
  • Developing a performance management system
  • Using standards, targets and objectives

Exercise: further develop case studies to plan project targets and individual SMART objectives

  • Module 7: The leader as a motivator
  • Traditional motivation methods
  • How to recognize de-motivation
  • Practical, everyday motivation techniques

Final exercise: the collection (outdoors or indoors depending on weather)

Post course work:

Delegates will highlight a task they have to work on. They are given a month to complete the task. They must then report back on how they undertook the task and results. This is linked directly to appraisal and revalidation and also asks for reflection.

CPD recognition:

Each day carries 6 CPD points. Each project has 1 point for completion. A total of 21 CPD points can be collected for the 3 day programme.
