What is this and who is it for?

NHS South of England and NHS Yorkshire and Humber have commissioned this six month leadership programme to provide emerging leaders (Agenda for Change 6-8a) and doctors in training (specialist registrar level 5+) and their sponsors with the skills to deliver improvements in quality and productivity by building leadership and improvement skills, the ability to engage others and create energy for change.

What will I get?

  • A twenty six week intensive leadership development programme, 90% of which is run virtually through web based seminars, action learning sets and social media connections.
  • This programme is fully funded but does not include backfill
  • The opportunity to make a significant contribution to your organisa-tions’ quality & cost improvement efforts
  • The rapid development of leadership & organisational skills
  • The ability to spread knowledge & skills around productivity in your own organisation and health community
  • An NHS Institute Diploma, continued professional developmental points (if appropriate), and knowledge and skills framework (KSF) evidence
  • Learning from working with your sponsor on a joint project
  • World class learning materials for quality and cost improvement

What will it cover?

The programme blends tools and approaches from:

  • Leadership and quality improvement
  • Social movement thinking
  • Management of change into a coherent and practical approach which will be delivered through events, web conference and online meetings from September 2012

How will we do it?

There will be:

  • A launch event
  • A series of nine online seminars
  • Topic specific learning networks (action learning sets), and
  • A celebration event

Over the course of the programme you, as the emerging leader, will need to invest ten days and your sponsor partner will need to invest five days, plus the time to deliver your project.

This will be supported by a national social media platform for shared learning by showcasing of QIPP projects.

You should undertake your QIPP projects jointly with your sponsor to maximise the potential for a successful outcome.

What do I need to do to apply?

1. Email Lucy Graham for an application form.

2. You will need to identify a sponsor partner from your local health community. This could be your line manager, a clinical leader or the improvement lead of your health care community. The Severn Deanery advises anyone interested to speak with their educational supervisor urgently.

3. You need to identify a business critical project linked to your organisation’s QIPP priorities which you and your sponsor partner will work on together over the course of the programme.

4. Both you and your sponsor partner should commit to share this learning with at least 40 colleagues across your local health region and demonstrate how you did this through a case study.

NHS South of England (West) will be managing the application process for South West Emerging Leaders.
